The Morehead Tourism Commission is hosting a public forum to gather input from the community on an initiative to designate Morehead as a Trail Town. The forum will be held on Monday, May 6th at 6pm at the Morehead Conference Center. Thinking about having a garden?
Sustainable Morehead's goal is to provide residents with sustainable living through education, demonstration projects an activities based on the relationship between personal, social and environmental health.
One of Sustainable Morehead's initiatives is to offer area residents the opportunity to grow fresh vegetables even though they might have their own space or adequate sun. Two reasons for encouraging gardening include the health benefits of eating locally grown organic vegetables and also less trucks transporting food means less pollution.
Sustainable Morehead manages two community garden sites. One site is by the recycling center and the other at the intersection of Forest Hills Drive and Jewell Lane. A fee of $20 per year is assessed for each garden plot.
This year, Sustainable Morehead gardeners may choose to partner with Project Worth or garden on their own. Project Worth is an extension of Grow Appalachia (www.growappaalachia.org), a program dedicated to helping the residents of Appalachia rediscover the value of gardening organically for their own health and possibly for profit. Project Worth will provide free seeds, organic fertilizer, organic insecticides and information about gardening and food preservation to those who wish to participate in the program. Project Worth will order seeds and other gardening needs based on the size of each garden. Project Worth gardeners must attend six education meetings and keep a journal of gardening activity.
The Project Worth education meetings will be held on April 15, May 21, June 18 July 16, Aug. 20, Sept. 17, and Oct 15. All meetings will be at 6pm in the Fellowship Hall of the United MEthodist Church on Main St. Area gardeners can sign up to receive seeds and organic fertilizer from Project worth if they plant a garden on their own property also.
