First Day Hike on January 1st, 2016!

Sustainable Morehead, The Sheltowee Trace Association, & Daniel Boone Rails to Trails are sponsoring a First Day Hike!

Participants will meet at the Morehead United Methodist Church Parking Lot at 10:00 AM Jan 1, 2016. We will carpool to the "Leatherwood Loop" trail in the Zilpo area of Cave Run Lake. As an alternate meeting spot, we will also briefly assemble at the Clear Creek Market about 10:30 before reaching the Leatherwood Trailhead.

Please allow about an hour travel and two hours of hiking.

A "New Years Good Luck" offering of Black Eyed Peas will be available for our hikers at the conclusion of the hike.

Meet at the Shallow Flats parking lot, which is located a short distance past the Forest Service Visitor's Center on Hwy 801.

We will hike the Lake View Trail.

Our hike will give us great views of Cave Run Lake so bring your camera.

The 2nd Sunday hike on November 8th will meet at the Methodist Church parking lot at 2:00 PM, and then travel to a favored trail nearby. We will most likely be hiking the Fern Valley Trail.

Dawkins Rail Trail Bike Ride

Saturday, 10/24 - Dawkins Rail Trail Bike Ride - We will meet at the Methodist Church at 9 a.m. to carpool to the Royalton trailhead. Pack a lunch for the trail because we will be gone most of the day.

Sheltowee Trail Conference

Second Sunday Hike, Oct 11. Meet at the Morehead Methodist Church parking lot @ 2:00PM. We'll be in search of another natural stone arch in the clear Creek/Glady/Zilpo area.

Second Sunday Hike 9/13 - The Second Sunday hike will be Sunday, 9/13. Meet at the Metholdist Church parking lot , 2:00 Sunday. Allow 3 to 4 hours including travel. We will hike part of the Glady loop near Zilpo and be searching for a nearby stone arch. All family members are welcome. Subaru-IMBA Trail Care Crew comes to Morehead, KY July 16-18

The Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew, on the road since 1997, is IMBA's grassroots educational program and an authority on sustainable trail building practices. Our professional trail experts travel year-round throughout the United States and beyond, leading trail work sessions, meeting with land managers and working with IMBA-affiliated clubs and the communities they serve to improve mountain biking opportunities. The Trail Care Crew program has inspired great volunteer trail work across the U.S. and abroad - a big help to government agencies and land managers who have limited funding for trail construction and upkeep. As a direct result, there are now thousands of new and improved trails in all 50 states, Canada, Mexico and several European countries.

Sustainable Morehead business meeting 7/21

The next Sustainable Morehead business meeting will be Tuesday, July 21st at 7pm in Wesley Hall (note room change!) at Morehead United Methodist Church.  We hope you will join us! On the agenda will be our 100 mile potluck, financial planning, and planning for winter.   All are welcome at business meetings to learn more about Sustainable Morehead and to get involved in the leadership of this organization.

Support Solar Power and the KY Sierra Club

An announcement from the Kentucky Sierra Club shared by a Sustainable Morehead member:  The Kentucky Solar Energy Society is working on an initiative to develop a license plate supporting solar power.  They hope to sign up 900 people who will commit to paying the $25 fee for the plate when it becomes available.  There is also a design contest currently underway.  For more information and to sign up, visit http://kyses.org/licenseplate.

Second Sunday Hike 7/12

The next Second Sunday Hike will be Sunday, July 12th at 2pm.  Meet at the Morehead United Methodist Church to carpool to the Clear Creek area where we will hike for 2 to 2.5 hours on a loop trail with moderate up and downhills.  The hike is very suitable for families but with no majestic views.  All of the hike will be in the woods.  Bring water and a snack.  For more information, call Lucy or Bob Pryor at (804) 779-2239.  We hope to see you there!

Time to dust off your bikes - Fourth Sunday bike rides are back 4/26!

The weather is warmer and its time to get back into bicycling!  Join us for the first bike ride of the season on Sunday, April 26th at 2pm.  We'll meet in Morehead United Methodist Church parking lot for an interesting ride in the Morehead area.  We hope to see you there!

Second Sunday Hike will be on 4/19

Due to the Cave Run Symphony Orchestra concert, our usual second Sunday Hike will take place on the third Sunday in April, the 19th.

Meet at the Shallow Flats parking lot, Sunday April 19, 2:00 PM. We'll hike the Lakeview Trail. Bring your cameras and binoculars for some great looks at Cave Run Lake before the trees leaf out.

Morehead Community Earth Day Festival 4/22

The Morehead State University Sustainability Committee has organized a Morehead Community Earth Day Festival that will take place on Earth Day, April 22, 2015 from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm at Don Greenhill City Park in Morehead, rain or shine. The festival will include information booths, educational activities, live music from Kentucky Traditional Music Center, local food, retail, and craft vendors, Morehead Community Recycling Center tours, MSU plant seedling sales and more. Sheltowee Trace Association 1st Saturday Hike April 4th

The Sheltowee Trace Association invites you to join them for the First Saturday Hike on April 4th along the Auxier Ridge trail in the Red River Gorge. This is a five mile loop hike along some of the most stunning vistas in the Daniel Boone National Forest.

This FREE event is open to everyone, members and future members, and dogs are permitted as long as they remain on a leash.  Register Now!

Participants are asked to meet at the trail head at 10:30. To get to the trail head you exit off the Combs Mountain Parkway at the Natural Bridge exit and turn left away from Natural Bridge. At stop sign, turn right towards Subway at the stop sign onto highway 15. Follow 15 back across the Parkway, up the hill then turn left at Tunnel Ridge into the Gorge. Go to the end of the road, follow signs to Auxier Ridge trail head.  Please plan for the weather. Dress according to the temps and predicted weather. Bring a snack, drinks etc as all hikes will cover about 5 miles and take 3 to 4 hours to complete.

The second Sunday hike on the Lakeview Trail scheduled for this Sunday, 3/8 has been cancelled.  We hope to reschedule this hike for April.

Community Garden Sign Ups, Business Meeting March 10th

With spring planting just around the corner, it is time to think about spring and summer gardening. For those who are short on garden space or lack a sunny spot on their lawn, signing up for a community garden plot is a great way to enjoy your own fresh vegetables, meet new people, and enjoy exercise and time outdoors during the warmer months.

New gardeners, as well as those who participated last year, are invited to attend a meeting on Tuesday, March 10th at 7 pm in Fellowship Hall at the Morehead United Methodist church. Information on each of the garden sites will be provided, and there will be an opportunity to reserve a garden plot for the upcoming growing season. There is a $20 refundable deposit required to reserve a plot. New and returning gardeners who are unable to attend the meeting on March 10th may sign up for a plot on Sustainable Morehead’s website.

Sustainable Morehead will also hold its business meeting on March 10th.  In addition to community gardens, we will also discuss the Earth Day Celebration scheduled for April 22nd.

Second Sunday Hike 3/8

Join us for the next Second Sunday Hike on Sunday March 8th. We'll meet at the Shallow Flats parking lot 2:00 PM for a hike on The Lake View Trail. Bring your cameras for some good views of Cave Run Lake before the trees leaf out. Don't forget to "spring forward" - daylight savings time begins on March 8th!

Second Sunday Hike 2/8

Join us for the next Second Sunday Hike on Sunday, February 8th, which will be led by Molly & Tom Carew. Meet at the Methodist Church parking lot at 1:30 pm. We can carpool to the hiking spot on Paragon Craney Road which is about 15-20 minutes south on 519. It is a relatively easy hike. Depending on the weather, we may do 45-60 minutes out and then back, but it will be the will of the crowd. We will cross a low stream at least 2 times each way. If it rains, the hike will be cancelled. We hope to see you next Sunday!
