2nd Sunday Hike December 8th

The next second Sunday hike will be Sunday, December 8th.  Meet at the Methodist Church parking lot @ 1:45 (note the new start time ) to car pool to the Sheltowee Trace trail head 2.9 miles west On US Hwy 60 from the KY Hwy 519 Stop Light. There is limited parking there. 

We will hike from the swinging bridge over Triplette Creek up to the junction with Limestone trail, about 45 minutes out & 35 minutes back. See you there in your best Santa attire!

Help to create opportunities for safe walking & bicycling in Morehead

Connie Spencer-Ackmerman of Daniel Boone Rails to Trails recently shared this announcement:

I want to share news of a very important first step in creating opportunities for safe walking and bicycling in Morehead. Earlier in the month I met again with the City Council to ask for support to develop a written plan that can be used to guide trail development and seek funding. Council advised me to meet with the Planning and Zoning Commission, which I did later that week. I committed to working every step of the way with Joe Parson, who oversees planning and zoning for the city. The Commission asked me to form a committee and notify that body when a committee is formed. An encouraging sign is that two Commission members volunteered to serve on the committee.

Please let me know if you would also like to serve. Even if you prefer not to serve at this time, I'm interested in your thoughts about other partners to engage in the process.

If you have the opportunity, please express to Council and Commission members your interest in this project. We can be especially appreciative of Joe's support over the past couple of years. Thank you for your patience throughout this effort.

October Bikes & Hikes

Starting in October, our Second Sunday Bike Ride will be replaced with a hike.  Read on for more information about this month's upcoming events!

Second Sunday Hike
Join us for a hike around Eagle Lake on Sunday, October 13th. Bring the whole family and expect some great fall colors! Hikers will meet in the parking lot of the MSU Fitness center at 2pm. Second Sunday Hikes are sponsored by Sustainable Morehead and Daniel Boone Rails to Trails.

Dawkins Line Rail Trail Bicycle Trip
Join area riders for an organized bike ride on the newly dedicated “Dawkins Line Rail/Trail State Park”. Meet at the Morehead United Methodist Church parking lot at 9:00AM Saturday, October 26, 2013, to carpool to the Royalton KY trailhead, a 60 minute drive. Bring your own water, snacks, and lunch for trail side breaks. This trail is constructed of packed limestone gravel and contains 24 trestles and a 662 foot tunnel. You can ride up to 36 miles on this flat converted railroad bed. You will experience wild flowers, fall colors birds, butterflies and other wildlife. Help support trails in Morehead and Rowan County

This year, Sustainable Morehead is focusing on promoting the development and maintenance of biking and hiking trails in Morehead and Rowan county.    Morehead Tourism has made significant progress with its work towards having Morehead designated as a trail town, so let's keep the momentum going! 

We invite all individuals interested in bicycling and hiking in our community to join us on Tuesday, September 17th, at 7pm to talk about what we can do to work with Morehead Tourism and city council to make these plans a reality.  We'll meet in the basement of Morehead United Methodist Church.

September Bikes & HIkes

Don't forget about our monthly Bikes & Hikes! This weekend will be the Second Sunday Bike Ride (Sunday September 8th) 2pm Meet at Morehead United Methodist Church parking lot for a 60-90 minute bike ride.

And mark your calendars for the Fourth Sunday Hike, Sunday, September 22nd, 2pm.
Meet at the Shallow flats viewing pond parking lot, located off Highway 801 near Cave Run Lake for a 60-90 minute hike in the woods.

The Second Sunday Bike Ride and Fourth Sunday Hike are joint efforts of Sustainable Morehead and Daniel Boone Rails to Trails.

Join us for the 4th annual 100 mile potluck Saturday, August 24th

Sustainable Morehead’s 100-Mile Potluck will be held on Saturday, August 24th from 6-8 p.m. at the City Park Community Garden site, located at the corner of Bridge and Triplett streets. If high temperatures or rain occur that day, the potluck will be held at the fellowship hall of the Morehead United Methodist Church. There will be a tour of the gardens, music and a potluck dinner.  If you are musically inclined, please bring your instrument and share your talents with the group!  Beverages will be provided, guests are asked to bring eating utensils, plates and a dish made from ingredients grown within a 100 mile radius of Morehead. Label the dish with the growing location of the food. Not every ingredient must be local, as it might prove difficult to find locally grown sugar and spices; the main components of the dish should be from local sources. Everyone in the community is invited to attend. We hope to see you there!
